Let’s explore some practical tips to achieving a sensational minimalist home without sacrificing personality.

Playing with Varying Tones of Neutral Palette and Textures

A monochromatic colour scheme consisting of whites, beiges and greys are characteristic of minimalist-designed spaces. Neutral colour tones have an amazing calming effects. To create a cosy and intimate space, incorporate varying shades of the neutral colour palette, with textural contrast of an artwork and soft furnishings like soft wool fabrics, rugs and lightweight curtain.

With the right dose of application, hues like blue, green or blush pink can subtly serve as muted accent colours to amp up a space with unique personality.

In this apartment in Cherry Crest, a light-toned palette of beige, cream and white and an abundance of natural wood was used to create a calm and relaxing family ambience. To give the apartment an accent highlight, slate grey was incorporated – a universal colour to maintain the minimalist and modern look.

Create Spatial Fluidity

Layout with an open-ended continuity between different hub spaces is of prime importance.  The natural flow enriches a minimalist design with a sense of aesthetic lightness and depth as we travel through the space.

“Floating” curved cabinets offset the rigidness of clean lines and sharp edges in this home at The Masterpiece.

Lighting is Everything

From natural light to ambient softer light, a good lighting design can accentuate the space with various moods.  Get as much natural light into the space as possible. To retain the clean lines of the space, recessed spotlights, trough lighting and LED strip lighting are fabulous way to keep overbearing lighting fixtures out of sight, such as the lounge space at this apartment in Providence Bay.  The key is to strike a balance between aesthetic and function.

In this apartment in Woodland Gardens, the dining room strikes a distinct Scandinavian note, highlighted by a pair of Louis Poulsen pendant lights.

Plan Ahead for a Fuss Free Space

Cutting the clutter is one of the greatest challenges for a minimalist design, especially in the space-starved Hong Kong homes.

There are plenty of innovative use of space and discreet storage solutions, but it pays to think ahead to incorporate thoughtful design during the spatial planning process.

The platform, the defining feature in this apartment in The Richmond, solves several design problems at once. Visually, the podium adds dimension and elevation and makes the room more interesting, while the steps create additional seating without the clutter of extra chairs.

Unconventional design and layout create an extraordinary space for a study in a challenging trapezoid-shaped living room in this apartment in One Robinson Place.

CLDW Youth Day 2023, welcoming students from DMHC Siu Ming Catholic Secondary School to our studio, was truly invigorating.

With so many disruptions happening in the past few years, we had all been socially isolated in one way or another. Spending most of our time in interior spaces, some might feel trapped, others depressed.

CLDW Youth Day was a much-needed channel for the participating youngsters to understand the powerful impact of a user-oriented space design and its ability to uplift emotions and connect people.

With the backing of my dedicated team members, the presentation tour was marked by fun, creative and engaging activities. Great to see all the youngsters roaming around our studio. Curious. Socially engaged.

My gratitude to all the students for sharing your encouraging feedbacks on our CLDW 25th Anniversary postcards – these memories will remain vivid and heart-warming for many years to come.

The younger generation holds the key to our future. It is our corporate responsibility to initiate positive engagement with them. I look forward to launching more youth-related initiatives, sowing the seeds for a bountiful future for the interior design industry and a better world.

1O1O Telecom Flagship Store – Tsim Sha Tsui

Covering an expansive area of 10,000 square feet, the 1010 Tsim Sha Tsui store’s signature feature is its LED-lit façade. In the interior, the design brings a progressive sensibility to the luxurious retail experience through the use of specially crafted leather seating, marble flooring and subtle wood veneers.

Clifton Leung X LeSportsac Crossover Launch Event at Pacific Place

We have not only reimagined the brand in the new retail space – but created our first crossover collaboration – a limited edition range of men’s lifestyle items, #CliftonLeungXLeSportsac. Clifton says when designing the new shop concept, his priority was to create a unique customer experience. The result is what he describes as “a futuristic gallery space”. To showcase LeSportsac’s fashion-forward pieces, we used an RGB lighting system featuring colour-changing technology that produces vibrant colours. For the print of the crossover collaboration, we drew inspiration from the “blueprint” of the interior design. We hope to foster people’s boundless imaginations and creativity.

one2free Megastore – Mong Kok

Gone are the days where mobile retail shops are covered with wall of phones and customers need to queue up to be served. The one2free Megastore aims to turn mobile retail shopping into a come-and hang out social experience. Capitalizing on the high ceiling and the prime location in the city hubbub Mongkok, we turned the 2-storey, 6,000 sq.ft. space into a modern loft design, accentuated by signature brick walls, black metal frames, pitched roof and an airy open space. The design concept symbolizes the contemporary and hip lifestyle of the younger generation in metropolitan cities.

Converse Retail Store – New Town Plaza, Shatin

In a 600 sqf outlet where hundreds of sneakers and sportswear items will have to be exhibited, the first challenge that has to be tackled in terms of design is to maximize the image effect in an outlet with a relatively small size. A full-height logo with the brilliant red and white colours is installed facing the main entrance of the shop. This key design feature, not only catches the attention of passers-by, but implies the powerful nature of the sports brand.

Escape to an urban oasis in this airy apartment

Understanding the family of this 1,600-sq ft apartment in La Clare Mansion needs to create a cocoon where they can unwind, connect and rejuvenate, we first redid the layout in order to make the apartment more airy and cosier. The original layout of the apartment had the kitchen, store room and maid’s room divided into three spaces. To make better use of the space, especially with the family loving to cook and invite guests over for meals, Clifton rearranged the space by putting the maid’s room on one side and combined the kitchen and store room on the other side. With the larger space, the family can now have an island in the kitchen, which acts as a meeting point for them to interact with guests while cooking or simply to spend some quality time as a family for breakfast.

With the new and improved layout for the bedrooms also comes a new hallway. Not only does the hallway serve the functional purpose, it is also a special gallery where the family can casually bump into each other while admiring art pieces that are close to their hearts.

“The design concept has a simple goal in mind: a cottage that doubles as a social space to entertain relatives and friends,” says Clifton Leung, Chief Designer of Clifton Leung Design Workshop, the design firm at the helm of the renovation.

A large private residential estate built in 1976 out in Yuen Long, Fairview Park is as close to true suburbia as one can get in Hong Kong. Its residents live in neatly arranged low-rise houses – each one complete with front and backyards. At some 20 years old, the property’s structure has never been touched before the couple buys it. To transform it into a modern French-style cottage home that makes the most of its picturesque hillside locale – as envisioned by the team – isn’t an easy task.

The team approaches it by first revamping the entire 1,000-sq. ft. 2-storey house. This includes gutting everything from the inside out – pipes, wiring, windows, etc – and redoing the layout. Perhaps most notably, the original three bedrooms on the first floor are converted into one continuous loft-like space comprised of the master bedroom, master bathroom and study room. The master bedroom leading directly into a corridor takes its cues from the open bathroom typically found in plush hotel rooms.

Good design isn’t a privilege only for the art and design sector or those who can afford it. Innovative, aesthetic and functional design should be enjoyed by everyone. Where better to start promoting this spirit of good design than in schools, a place where many will spend their formative years.

Clifton Leung Design Workshop has been active in promoting good design among students for many years. The design firm even worked on a makeover project for a local secondary school to help improve its students’ learning and wellbeing.

Known for its focus on innovation and learning beyond classrooms, CCC Tam Lee Lai Fun Memorial Secondary School got in touch with Clifton a few years back when it decided to rejuvenate several spaces to inspire its students. While the public school, which is located in Tuen Mun, had a limited budget, Clifton was able to tap into his imagination to find cost-friendly ways to revamp the school.

One of the main features of the project is the Clifton Learning Commons, a room designed to support students’ after-school learning. In the space, students can revise their schoolwork, explore other interests and forms of learning, and also engage in discussions with other schoolmates. There is also a teacher on site to provide help when needed. In order to create a space that inspires students and one that they actually want to visit, Clifton came up with the idea of a more relaxed environment in the school setting. To do so, he focused on bringing the outdoors in.

Taking advantage of the large windows, which allowed a lot of natural light in, he introduced many green features. These include an artificial grass carpet running across the room, potted plants and a lot of recycled wood. While the carpet is made of artificial grass, it has the texture of real grass, making it both hygienic and comfortable for students to sit on or lie down. This creates a relaxed mood where students can freely exchange ideas. For the partitions and decoration, Clifton recycled wooden pellets, which gave the space a rustic feel.

To create a cosy atmosphere, Clifton transformed a mattress into a comfortable sofa and provided an unconventional form of seating with tyres. These tyres can function as both tables and chairs, and can be moved around easily so students can gather in groups of different sizes for discussions or be on their own to do some individual work.

Another highlight of the school project is the CL3 05 Learning Support Centre, a multi-purpose room for meetings and functions. It also serves as a homely environment where students can pick up skills for daily tasks, such as making breakfast and coffee.

In designing this room, Clifton focused on acquiring and upcycling many pre-loved items. Not only is this cost-friendly, it also sets a good example for students to treat items and the environment with respect. Various Coca Cola plastic carriers have been transformed chairs, which can be moved around easily with their wheels. Meanwhile, wine storage boxes were assembled into a one-of-a-kind display shelf. Clifton also wanted to create an eclectic mood for this room, reflecting the different personalities of students and staff who may enter. He did so by contrasting the rustic mood of the room with an antique Chinese table. The table was then juxtaposed against a simple but custom-made display piece containing the school’s initial made with cork boards and CDs.

“Working within your budget can be tricky when it comes to school projects, but this doesn’t mean we can’t create a good design without good budget. In fact, having this ‘disadvantage’ promotes more creativity. It also serves as a precious lesson for students to appreciate our environment more,” says Clifton.

This minimalist aesthetic is also seen in the Kartell Componibili storage unit in the dining room. The wooden unit gives the apartment a sleek Scandinavian feel, while the use of indirect light and the placement of a painting in the center allow the home to feel more spacious despite the use of several large storage units.

Complementing the design are stand-out funiture, such as an Innermost Origami table, Knoll Bertoia Wire Chair, Magis Deja-vu Chair by Naoto Fukusawa and Kartell La Marie chair by Phillippe Starck.

Warm, concealed lighting is also used to great effect. “We spent a lot of time thinking about the lighting of the unit, and hope the effect can create a different feeling during the day and at night,” said Leung.

Lighting was not a problem in the master bedroom, which had two large windows allowing natural light to enter. But it presented a different challenge: an awkward corner which made it tricky to maximize space. But by cunningly turning it into a walk-in wardrobe, Leung increased storage space and freed the bedroom for eye-catching furniture pieces, such as a Fritz Hansen Ant chair by Arne Jacobsen and a Bang & Olufsen Beloit 17 speaker.
